Be careful when using credit cards – make sure the credit card is swiped in front of you. There are many 24 hour ATMs linked to international networks (Visa, Maestro, Plus, Cirrus, MasterCard) – although your NZ bank account may impose transaction charges. Bargaining is normal in markets although organised retail shops, including government/state emporiums, have set prices. Be aware of touts at the markets and other public places – they may appear to be friendly people but are likely to divert you to certain shopping locations for a commission. Electricity is 230 V to 240 V. Three round-pin style sockets are used – hotels will have adaptors. There are regular blackouts – but the major hotels all have back-up generators.
