Patient Instructions for Admit Day of Procedure
(Peter Lougheed Centre)
Admit Day of Procedure (ADOP) refers to a person being admitted to hospital on the day of their surgery or procedure.
Unless your doctor has given you other instructions to prepare you for your procedure, please follow the instructions below.
To fi nd out the time of your surgery, please phone the hospital the day before your surgery at
403-943-4058 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If your surgery is on Monday (or Tuesday following a
holiday weekend), please call the previous working day.
Please Note:
If you need to cancel or postpone your surgery, please call your surgeon’s offi ce and the hospital
admitting offi ce right away at 403-943-4558.
Day of Procedure
When you arrive at the hospital on the day of your surgery, please go to the Admitting Offi ce fi rst.
You must report to the Admitting Offi ce on the day of your surgery at the time you have been given.
Admitting is located on the main fl oor inside the south entrance.
There are some restrictions as to what you can eat or drink the night before and on the day of
your operation. It is important that you follow these instructions.
If you do not stop eating and drinking as instructed, your surgery may be postponed.

The following instructions apply to all patients having surgery with a local, regional or general
anesthetic.
Diet:
Do not have any solid food, milk, milk products or unstrained juices (e.g. orange juice with pulp,
tomato juice) after midnight (this includes gum and candy).
You may have clear fl uids up to 4 hours before your surgery. Clear fl uids include water, apple
juice, pop, Jell-O, black tea or coffee or
y Nothing to eat or drink after midnight, including water.
Medication:
y If you take aspirin or prescription anticoagulants (blood thinners), speak with your surgeon 2 weeks before your surgery or follow the directions of the consulting doctor in the Pre-Admission Clinic.
y Bring your medications in their original containers including inhalers, aspirin, vitamins,
over-the-counter and herbal medicines.
y Take regular medications (other than diabetic medications) with a sip of water unless otherwise
directed.
y If you take insulin or diabetes pills, your surgeon or doctor in the Pre-Admission Clinic will tell you whether or not to take it the day of surgery. It is important to bring your medications with you.
y If you have any questions about medications, contact your surgeon.
Skin Preparation:
y Please bathe or shower and shampoo your hair the evening before or morning of your admission to hospital. You will be advised if you need to do any special skin preparation.
y Remove all make-up before surgery. If you wear make-up to the hospital, please bring a cleanser to remove it. Nail polish does not need to be removed.
y You must remove eyeglasses, contact lenses, wigs, false eyelashes and jewellery before surgery. You may also be asked to remove your denture(s) or partial plate(s). Please bring the appropriate
containers for these articles.
General Instructions Before Surgery
y If a yellow band is put on your wrist, do not remove it. If it is removed, you will need to have
another blood sample drawn before surgery.
y If you have a fever, cold, fl u symptoms or infection, call your surgeon or family doctor.
y Do not smoke or drink any alcohol for 24 hours before coming to hospital.
y Eat well the day before surgery and have a snack before bedtime, unless you have been given other y Try to have a relaxing day and a good night’s sleep.
y If you need Home Care after surgery, please tell your doctor or nurse on admission.
What To Bring to the Hospital
y Alberta Health card and Blue Cross or other insurance card y Proof of medical coverage (out-of-province residents only) y Information handouts you have received about your condition or surgery y All your medications (in original containers) including inhalers, aspirin, vitamins,
over-the-counter and herbal medicines.
– hearing aids and eyeglasses– walking aids (cane, walker, crutches)– braces, splints, slings– toiletry items (for example, soap, shampoo, toothbrush and paste, comb, deodorant)– housecoat and non-slip slippers– comfortable clothing to wear home y Items requested by your surgeon (bra, girdle, brace, etc.) y A book or magazine to help pass the time (after your admission and before your surgery, there will Please call 403-944-0202 to arrange for a Certifi ed Health Care Interpreter at no cost. bring a family member or friend who speaks the same language as you; however, with health
situations, it is important that a certifi ed Health Care Interpreter be used to interpret.
Note: If you are under the age of 18, you must bring a parent or legal guardian.
What Not To Bring
y anything of value (jewellery, credit cards) The hospital will not be responsible for lost items
General Information After Your Procedure
Visitors:
Visiting hours on inpatient units are usually from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. 7 days a week.
You may be asked to share a room with someone of the opposite gender if there is a shortage
of hospital beds. Your care will not be affected if you do not wish to share a room with
someone of the opposite gender.
Please choose one family spokesperson to receive information about your condition/treatment and pass it on to other family and friends. Please tell the nurse doing your admission (in Day Surgery or the Inpatient Unit) the name and contact information of your spokesperson.
Discharge:
y Discharge times range from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., depending on which patient care unit you are admitted to. Please be sure you have arranged for someone to take you home, at or before the
specifi ed time, on your day of discharge. When you are discharged, a responsible adult must
accompany you home either by driving you or going with you in a taxi.
y Do not operate any motor vehicle, boat, machinery, or power tools, if the procedure you have
undergone involved any form of sedation or anesthetic, including a local anesthetic. Speak with your medical staff to fi nd out how long you should wait.
